Public Works Department, in which they ask that they may be grant- -ed house-allowances, although possessing houses of their om. 2318313

When I made the recommendation in paragraph 2

of my Despatch of the 13th. of June last, it was not my intention that the allowance should be paid to those officers, who had houses of their own, but provision has been made in the Estimates for allowances to all Overseers and Sunitary Inspectors, with the exception of two, who have Government Quarters. It was obviously necessary to make such provision, as at any time it is open to

officers who own houses in which they live to divest themselves of

their houses, and apply for inclusion in the scheme for providing

free quarters and for the grant of an allowance pending their

construction. I have already infor.ed the memorialists that in the

event of their doing tuin, I am prepared to recommend such applica- -tions for your approval.

I am unable to recomend that officers who have built houses, or acquired houses, to live in themselves should be
